Ask the Health Educator: Plan B and Possible Pregnancy

Question from May 5, 2015

I took plan b the beggining of April and had a normal period in march its now may and I still haven’t had my period was spose to start april 27 or 28 I have a normal 28 day cycle. I had unprotected sex the 25th of April and the begging of may could I be pregnant or is it the plan b messing with my cycle

Answer:

Anytime you have unprotected sex, you could become pregnant. The only way to know for sure would be to take a pregnancy test. Since you took Plan B to prevent pregnancy in the past, it sounds like you are not ready to be a parent. In that case, it would be best for you to start a reliable method of birth control. Plan B should be used for emergency situations only and not as regular means of preventing pregnancy.

Please come in as soon as possible for a pregnancy test and if the results are negative, we can also start you on a method of birth control. We hope to see you soon.
